Yesterday morning I was out on my longest training run of the prep for July’s endurance challenge. As always, one of my guys ran with me for the first half to keep me company and pass the time on what is becoming increasingly long mornings.
He has just turned 30 years old, father of two awesome boys, and a successful business owner.
He was telling me how he had just returned from a friend’s wedding and was shocked to see how out of shape many of his friends had gotten now that they had settled down and started having kids.
I remember people telling me ‘just wait ‘till you have kids, you’ll see’.
When I kept training hard they said ‘just wait until you hit 30, you’ll see’.
I got better, stronger, fitter, faster.
‘Oh yeah, wait until you hit 40, you’ll see’.
Fuck you, I’ll go harder.
‘Yeah, well, well, wait until 50, you’ll see’.
Let me save you the time. While you’re sodding about wasting time, waiting for me to fall off, I’ll still be here putting in the time and the reps. Building off of a foundation made over decades of consistent effort.
It would literally be harder for me to stop than to keep going at this point. I wouldn’t know what the fuck else to do with myself.
My friend is just discovering the void opening up between the in-shape 30 year old, and what life could have been for him had he chosen the very well established path of decline upon settling.
That gap becomes wider and more obvious with each decade of life that passes.
Health & Fitness requires a little and often approach in regard to investment. Over time the interest compounds and amounts to huge results.
It takes years upon years to become an overnight success.
I love hearing about how everyone tells him it’s easy for him, or that it ‘must be nice’.
That boy works his ass off and deserves everything life ‘gives’ him.
His sons will follow his example, because that’s what sons do.

Had this realisation good few years ago too. It's like when did settling for the average become normal just when the dynamic of kids arrive 🤦🏻♂️
